Any number of issues can cause diaper rash, ranging from simply being in a wet diaper too long to food allergies or a reaction to medication. Before using any diaper rash cream, gently clean your baby's bottom and dry thoroughly. If possible, leave the baby out of her diaper for an hour or two to allow the skin to breathe.
Mix Your Own Diaper Cream for Mild Rashes
Step 1
Clean the baby's bottom and allow him to lie on a towel without a diaper. Often allowing the baby's skin to dry and breathe for an hour or two will be enough to clear up a mild rash.
Step 2
Mix equal parts lanolin and petroleum jelly. Apply this to the affected area at each diaper change if airing the skin is not enough to clear up the rash.
Step 3
Apply the lanolin and petroleum jelly mixture to the baby's dry diaper area as a preventative if your baby is prone to diaper rash, or will be in a wet diaper overnight or for an extended period of time.
Mix Homemade Diaper Cream for Moderate Rashes
Step 1
Gather your ingredients to mix a stronger rash cream that is ideal for moderate diaper rashes, such as those caused by diarrhea. Zinc oxide, petroleum jelly and lanolin are widely available where diapers and other baby supplies are sold, but you may need to ask your pharmacist to order Aluminum acetate, also known as Burrow's solution.
Step 2
Mix equal parts zinc oxide, petroleum jelly, lanolin and aluminum acetate. Apply immediately to your baby's diaper area.
Step 3
Store any remaining diaper cream in a small, airtight container. Keep in a cool, dry place.
