If you have children, you have probably experienced your share of carpet mishaps. While spills are a common occurrence, every once in a while an odd stain enters the mix. If your toddler has decided to finger paint with diaper cream on your living room carpet, remain calm. According to 3M, diaper cream falls under the category of greasy, oil-based stains. Such stains require the use of a product that can break down the oils in the diaper cream, releasing them from the carpet fibers.

Step 1

Remove as much of the diaper cream as you can. Use a plastic spoon or knife to scrape excess amounts of diaper cream from the carpet fibers.

Step 2

Apply rubbing alcohol to a white cloth. Blot the carpet with the white cloth. Continue to blot the carpet until there is no trace of diaper cream.

Step 3

Dampen a cellulose sponge with water and add a squirt of dish soap. Squeeze the sponge to create a lather. Blot the carpet to remove alcohol residue.

Step 4

Fill a small spray bottle with water. Spray the carpet with the water, flushing away soap residue. Blot-up as much of the water as you can with an absorbent towel. Allow the carpet to air dry.

Tips and Warnings

  • If the diaper cream leaves a stain after the initial cleaning, repeat the process. Substitute 3 percent hydrogen peroxide for the rubbing alcohol.
  • Do not rub or scrub the carpet during the cleaning process. Rubbing and scrubbing can damage the carpet fibers.
